Perched on the edge of the Aegean, the remote island of Karpathos has retained many of its unique cultural traditions. The island’s traditional dress is some of the most visually stunning in Greece, and shows design influence from the Ottomans, Venetians and Genovese.

This medallion-like design is based on an 18th century embroidery fragment from the Dodecanese island of Astypalaia. In Greek mythology, Astypalaia is one of Poseidon’s lovers who he spirited away in the form of a winged and fish-tailed leopard.
Beyond its beauty, this very fine repeat shows evidence of the design influence of the Venetians, who held control of the island for several hundred years.

The textile arts were particularly developed on the Cycladic Island of Naxos, where unique embroidery and weaving traditions flourished. Techniques were often passed down through families and used to embellish and decorate soft furnishings in the home, as well as reflect wealth and accomplishment on a women's bridal trousseau.
This geometric and monochromatic leaf pattern is characteristic of Naxos designs where, despite long periods of Venetian and Ottoman rule, regional craft traditions endured within the community.

Distinct to a handful of islands, this remarkable design would have originally been executed in deep red needlepoint and is believed to be influenced by Venetian patterns for embroidery and lace.
The islands of the Cyclades were connected to Venice through trade and periodic conquest, which created great trade wealth and lead to the development of distinct and elaborate textile traditions. Interestingly, this pattern originating from Venice is believed to have been inspired by even earlier Venetian trade with Mamluk Egypt, as early as the tenth century.
